Individuals and families have too many different needs for one plan to cover everyone equally well. You will have to identify your needs and assess your budget to find the best one for you.
Health insurance premiums are skyrocketing, and, for many people, they are the first thing to consider when looking for insurance. For the most part, you'll be choosing between HMO and PPO plans. Both HMO and PPO plans contract with certain doctors and hospitals, who agree to provide services at a discounted rate. As long as you receive care from a provider on this list, and the costs will be fully covered, except for a nominal copay.
The difference is when you want to see doctors or go to hospitals that aren't on the list. Although emergency care is always fully covered, a non-emergency visit to a provider not on the list will mean that you pick up some of the cost. In a PPO plan, they will pay a portion, usually one to two thirds. An HMO will pay nothing.
Once you have decided on the type of plan, you need to explore the specifics of each:
Find the plan that gives you the best coverage, with the fewest changes in doctors and treatment, at a price you can afford. That is the best health insurance for you.
